hound — a cognate across the family (PIE *kwon-)
cognate
The word for 'dog, hound', one etymon descending down several branches and meeting at the reconstructed Proto-Indo-European *kwon-. Reflexes (attested): italic: canis; hellenic: kyon; indo-iranian: svan; germanic: hound. The Germanic form follows Grimm's law k -> h: canis / *kwon- -> hound. The reflexes are attested; *kwon- is a reconstruction (a postulate, not sealed). This cognate is where the branches that carry it connect.
